ICTSI partners with PLDT for 5G roll out at MICT

Manila International Container Terminal will be the first terminal in the ICTSI Group and the first in the Philippine port industry to utilize 5G technology.

The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is set to become the Philippines’ first intelligent port as International Container Terminal Services, Inc. partners with PLDT Inc. for the roll out of 5G technology at ICTSI’s flagship terminal.

With the partnership, ICTSI aims to leverage 5G technology to further raise efficiency and optimize port operations at MICT. 

To drive this journey forward, ICTSI wants to deploy a unified backbone of communication across the port using 5G technology.

“5G opens the door to a whole new world of possibilities in the IOT space. It sets the stage for the MICT to be able to roll out new terminal technologies rapidly in the years to come,” says Mark Cruz, MICT Director for Information Technology.

With 5G’s high capacity, speed and low latency features, ICTSI sees several opportunities to use the technology to provide rich communication not just to the different port technologies deployed at MICT but also to stakeholders across the supply chain.

“It’s very important to us that we constantly drive efficiency and optimization in the cargo flows. And to do that, we also need to push that optimization beyond the boundaries of the fence of the container terminal,” said Brian Hibbert, ICTSI vice president and chief information officer. 
 
From automation to other various Internet of Things solutions, ICTSI has been leveraging technology to make its ports around the world as efficient as possible. The Company operates one of the first fully automated container terminals in the world – Victoria International Container Terminal in Melbourne, Australia. Last year, ICTSI signed on to connect 31 of its terminals to IBM’s and Maersks’ blockchain platform TradeLens.
