CGSA reaches 12 million TEU milestone
Contecon Guayaquil S.A. (CGSA), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) subsidiary that operates the Guayaquil Container and Multipurpose Terminals at the Port of Guayaquil, handled its 12 millionth TEU last November.
The milestone comes 13 years since CGSA started its operations in 2007 and was achieved during the handling of MV Maersk Semarang. At 347 meters long, the 8,715-TEU container vessel is one of the largest ships operating in the Ecuador-Far East route.
The dredging of the 95-kilometer access channel leading to the country’s primary seaport, as well as CGSA’s investment in infrastructure, technology, and port equipment, have made it possible for neopanamax vessels to efficiently navigate directly into the heart of the city and provide a huge boost to both the local and national economy.
CGSA started handling neopanamax vessels in 2019 and became the first terminal in Ecuador capable of handling these large ships. The arrival of these large ships allows CGSA to maximize its operations and set the golden standard for other ports in the region.
In October, the Company committed to invest USD18 million to further boost the port’s capacity to handle large ships. The investment, to be carried out in three stages, includes port equipment upgrades, infrastructure works, and further deepening of the terminal’s Pier 1 draft to 13.5 meters.
CGSA will continue to provide its world-class brand of port services at the Port of Guayaquil until 2046 after successfully securing a 20-year extension of its original concession in December last year.
