SBITC staff’s quick response, emergency training save truck driver’s life
On 29 April, on-duty security and HSSE personnel of Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC) responded to a truck driver who was having a seizure. The team’s quick response and emergency training helped save the driver’s life, preventing what could have been a major incident inside the terminal.
Based on the report, security personnel Eugene Reyes, Melgar Tilan, Jimboy Fajardo, and Dexter Dorongon, and HSSE staff Delfin Fredeluces III, rushed to assist the driver and assess his situation. One of the security personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive the driver and placed him in recovery position while waiting for the emergency vehicle to arrive. The truck driver was able to regain consciousness and feel better after resting for a few minutes. He was later advised to see a doctor for a complete medical assessment.
Accidents and emergency situations happen when and where people least expect them. Fortunately, the security personnel’s quick thinking and immediate response helped saved the truck driver’s life.
Efren Ryann M. Abado, SBITC Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Supervisor, explained that terminal personnel regularly undergo CPR and basic life support training.
“Aside from the regular training, our staff also undergo refresher courses every month,” said Mr. Abado, who added that SBMA also provides annual port safety and health awareness training along with other health and safety trainings throughout the year.
SBITC takes pride in its efforts to train everyone on life lifesaving and first aid measures. This keeps the number of untoward incidents low and ensures the health and safety of everyone, including truck drivers and guests who visit the terminal.
Mr. Abado recalled a similar incident last year, where another driver was given CPR and subsequently brought to the hospital for medical care. He added that while SBITC goes to great lengths to make the workplace safe for all personnel. The company also ensures that everyone is prepared and ready to respond to accidents and other emergency situations.
“Trained personnel are able to confidently and swiftly respond to emergency situations because of adequate training and experience in administering first aid,” emphasized Mr. Abado.
Citing the positive outcome of the recent incident, SBITC reiterates its call for everyone to take part in the company’s regular training and first aid drills.
