VICT spearheads transport industry efforts for bushfire survivors
Victoria International Container Terminal reached out to survivors of the massive bushfires in Victoria with a donation of 42 empty containers.
Thousands of families and wildlife were displaced by multiple fires that raged across large areas in Victoria from December last year up to March. Prioritizing the long-term needs of the survivors, VICT decided to donate empty containers to help survivors re-establish their properties by having equipment and belongings they managed to save safely stored inside the containers.
The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) helped identify 21 recipients of the containers and called on the transport industry for support in transporting the containers to the identified locations. DSN Transport, Cahills Transport, Freestones Transport, Secon Logistics, Nationwide Towing, Buchan Towing, and Tasman Logistics responded by providing the trucks, side loaders and tilt trays for the delivery of the empty containers in June. The companies offered their services for free and paid their drivers’ wages and other related expenses like accommodation during the delivery.
The first lot of 21 containers were delivered in June, with the remaining 21 containers delayed due to COVID lockdown and scheduled to be delivered to burnt out sites in north eastern Victoria in September. VICT thanks the VTA and the companies for taking part and showing support to the affected families during these challenging times.
